Scapegoat

I couldn't watch it, the description was enough
No human being should have to witness another life get snuffed
They said he was a drug addict and he resisted arrest
But when he cried for his mama with his airway suppressed
We understood the depravity and the gravity of the moment
If it was concealed before this time, now it's all out in the open
Yet the breadcrumbs were there, we just didn't follow the trail
Middle passage to lynching tree to millions locked in jail
If we say it's ancient history, we don't understand history
And pleading, "I'm not racist!" is thinly disguised bigotry
I'm pointing my finger, but there's three back at me
I didn't choose to be white, but I'm choosing to be free
Of the idea that I'm innocent just because I didn't do it
Just because it wasn't my knee doesn't mean I'm not colluding
With a system that benefits me and people like me
So give me the word of truth, and help me divide it rightly

So what do we do? What's the path we ought to follow
Because guilt is not productive, empty words are ringing hollow
We gotta swallow pride and let our actions speak the loudest
And pay attention to the cloud of witnesses surrounding
From Mother Emanuel to Reverend Jeremiah Wright
In the battle of ideas, don't be terrified to fight
Let's just bear each other's light, I know we wanna be polite
But the weapons formed against us don't respond to being nice
All this drama in our lives is a comma, not a period
The end of sentence is restoration, God's criteria
The hands of evildoers or the hands and feet of Christ
Which one are we? Well, name the price
Of turning away from the pain and ignoring the innocent
Of placing profit over people, supporting ignorance
too rich for my blood, so I plead the name of Jesus
No more scapegoats, Holy One, redeem us
