Johannesburg

I walk through suburban tunnels
With graffiti on the walls
By the local white bread kids
And the lines of the swastika
Form a pattern that has spread
To those who have it all
And we're living in a country where democracy's symbolic
A disguise to mask the hate
A country where the speech is free
And goes without a cost
Unless it gets to an offended face
And when it comes down
To push and shove
I feel so powerless
Whenever I begin to feel this way
I'm in Johannesburg

100,000 soldiers are marching off a cloud
Pounding at the gates
No angels at our shoulder
Standing by or watching over
The military states
And all I see is colour
There is no black and white
There is no truth for me
You can have my coat now, honey
If you can't wait
Gonna burn Johannesburg

And the bombs keep getting bigger
To accommodate the target
'Til there is no hiding place
There is no use in talkin'
When words get in the way
And hate is always safe
Oh, when it comes down to fair and square
There is no remedy
And all that I have left is time to waste
'Til we burn Johannesburg

There are strangers in the world
Victims of the darkness
The folks we never see
No place that you can see them
And no politician cares
Or even knows they're there
But when it comes time
To shine the light
It is all so clear to me
Why must we pretend when we stare it in the face?
