Savannah

Midnight comes as Savannah
Looks out from her bedroom window
Summer lightning brings the sky alight
The smell of rain on a southern night

The warm wind blows as Savannah
Takes a step outside the screen door
Watches backlit clouds and the rain they bring
Gently sways upon the front porch swing

Every time she hears the thunder
She thinks back at least a hundred
Times she wished that she
Could be with him again
But until that day comes calling
She alone will watch the falling rain

One A.M. and Savannah
Prays for merciful surrender
Hears the train across a trestle track
And wonders if one day he'll come on back

And while the world sleeps Savannah
Is tortured by those restless mind games
Maybe soon the morning birds will sing
And end this sultry night of suffering

Every time she hears the thunder
She thinks back at least a hundred
Times she wished that she
Could be with him again
But until that day comes calling
She alone will watch the falling rain
She alone will watch the falling rain
