On the Long Way Round

It was in the early morning on the phantom sea I spied
Three burning merchant ships all sinking down into the tide
I couldn't move a muscle till they sunk out of my view
But don't come to me I'm on the long way round to you

And while roaming in the ranges where the wild waters rise
Something like a thunderbolt struck me between the eyes
Don't ask me what it was, I don't really have a clue

As I scrambled to my feet with my head still in a daze
I stumbled on my way through the fog and rolling haze
I wasn't feeling happy but nor was I feeling blue

I wondered down the back roads that took me to the south
With gravel in my boots and dust in my mouth
I was weary I was lonesome I was not sure what to do

I spent my days in digs singing dirges in the dark
Gazing from my doorstep till the dogs all lost their back
My friends they were not many but neither were they few

There was only one I trusted for the rest seemed kind of sly
I slept with one eye open not knowing what they might try
I never heard them say a word that I thought to be true
But don't come to me I'm on the long way round to you

All the people that he'd met he remembered them by name
But after years of moving their faces became the same
The last I every saw of him as he sunk from my view
Don't come to me I'm on the long way round to you

So now I'm going back again I'll find my way back home
I've done the rounds to many times for it to be unknown
I may not know a lot but one thing I know is true
You won't be waiting long now for me to come to you
