Grief and Relief - Act 3 Scene 6 - The Metamorphosis

(Narrator) The next morning
The maid comes into Gregor's room with a broom in her hand
She smiles at Gregor and pushes him with
The broomstick because she wants to tease him
Her expression quickly changes as she
realizes that Gregor isn't responding
She hits him harder to roll over his body
In this moment, she realizes that he is actually dead
She runs out of the room shouting...

(Maid) Mr. Samsa! Mrs. Samsa!
(Father) (from the background) What is it?
(Maid) It is dead

(Narrator) Mr.
Samsa comes hurriedly into the living room adjusting his gown
Grete and Mrs. Samsa follow him
The three of them go into Gregor's room
They look shocked and relieved at the same time
They stand around Gregor's body for a few moments and then
Silently walk back to the living room holding each other's hands
The three lodgers take entry from the other side of the house
(Lodger) Is breakfast not ready yet?
(Father) Kindly leave immediately!

(Narrator) The three lodgers exchange glances and nod to Mr. Samsa
They turn around and leave without saying a word
Mr. and Mrs. Samsa and their daughter sit at the
Dining table, just looking at each other and around the room
The maid comes back
(Maid) Mrs. Samsa, you do not have to worry about that thing
I will dispose the body

(Narrator) Mrs. Samsa nods her head in response
The maid leaves
(Father) We should let go of her soon
(Sister) Let us all take leave from work today

(Narrator) Mr. and Mrs. Samsa nod in affirmation
The three of them stand up and walk out of the house hand in hand
Mr. Samsa in the middle with his daughter and wife on either side...
