Down off the Farm

Saturday morning, thinking that I'll go to town
Take a bath, hitch the wagon, then roll on down
There might be a hanging, there might be a wedding
Bare knuckle fighting or a dress up cotillion
It's a hot summer's day and I gotta' get away from the farm.

Stop at the dry goods store for some coffee and flour
Stroll down the boardwalk tipping my hat all around
Have a beer and a bump at the Star Saloon
Where the whores are half price from 8 till noon
But I promised my mother that I'd never lay with their kind

I might ride over to the county fair
There's laughing and shouting and devil-may-care
There might be a pretty girl waiting there
For someone to offer his arm
Oh, some old boy, down off the farm

Been awful lonely since mother and daddy passed on
Sister got married and brother just up and gone
He sends me cards every now and again
From all kinds of places I've never been
It was a hot summer's day when he rode away from the farm

I might ride over to the county fair
There's laughing and shouting and devil-may-care
There might be a pretty girl waiting there
For someone to offer his arm
Oh, some old boy, down off the farm
