Famous Dead People

You stare at blank canvases,
Paint the famous and the dead,
Call them imaginary friends,
Oh, but I was the living one offered you love,
Why would I need that, you said,

When I can have company vibrant and bold,
In pictures and words and in song,
Why would I need your quiet, fierce love,
Or your arms to sleep soundly at night?

Oh, I have the company of spirits and stars,
And my palate so lovely and bright,
And I have blank canvases I can fill up,
With the friends who can only do right

So, you sit at your easel and pour out your soul,
Into the grainy, stretched canvas,
And the faces you paint look at you from the walls,
Where you hang them in contemplation

And all I can do is imagine you now,
And send you my love in a line,
'Cause I'm not the face that you long to see,
You've got famous dead people aplenty,

No, I'm not the face that you long to see,
You've got famous dead people aplenty
