Riddle Me This
My body, the evidence, middle schoolers, the jury
When I told the stories, they rolled their eyes
Said, a life has space for only one tragedy, one pair of hands can violate this body
So tell me, innocence lost or stolen?
Because I woke that morning with hips forgetting what it felt like to hold it
Forgetting I am beautiful and what it felt like to know it
When I was young and a gymnast, my instructor asked me to stay after class
Turned the lights down low, put my head in his lap
Said, don't be afraid, this is where we take naps
Sooner or later we all face our judgement
He may not deserve it, but I choose forgiveness
Woman, believe me
His hands were sinful, your hips are holy (Hips are holy, hips are holy)
Your tears can't wash him clean
Baby girl, haven't you heard?
You can't steal peace from an angel on earth (Angel on earth)
I've seen my Momma become a doctor, and I've watched my Daddy write a book
Together they built a coward's worst fear, a woman who knows whats she's worth
So believe me when I say that I am done crying, hear me when I say this body is mine
Sealed lips and politeness just ain't any fun, so just like a girl, these words are a gun
You were thirty years old, balding
Preying on girls who were not yet women half naked at a rave with no adult supervision
The taste of fresh air always burns at first sip, so before I go, first riddle me this
Monsters or men? Is it truth or a myth?
And I'll stop writing rape poems once you start to listen
Woman, believe me
His hands were sinful, your hips are holy (Hips are holy, hips are holy)
Your tears can't wash him clean
Baby girl, haven't you heard?
You can't steal peace from an angel on earth (Angel on earth)
I'll tell the whole world what you did in that room
With sunlight and time, all things will bloom
Even the truth
Woman, believe me
His hands were sinful, your hips are holy
Your tears can't wash him clean
Haven't you heard?
You can't steal peace from an angel on earth
Woman, believe me
His hands were sinful, your hips are holy (Hips are holy, hips are holy)
Your tears can't wash him clean
