Sky on a Winter's Night

Sky on a Winter's Night

As a child I longed to see
Clear bright nights and frost on trees
When my father helped me find
Constellations bright

Even in the town it seemed
Stars were bright and planets clear
Pinpoint lights in trillions beamed
Lighting up the sky

Mars and Venus, Jupiter
Plough, Orion, Polar Star
Milky Way that spirals far
Lighting up the night

Now even in the countryside
An orange glow is scattered wide
Blanketing the midnight skies
Hiding all the stars

But you can see the Northern Lights
The myriad of stars so bright
In majestic havens
On our crowded busy Isles

Mars and Venus, Jupiter
Plough, Orion, Polar Star
Milky Way that spirals far
Lighting up the night

A century is passed and gone
Since my sailor dad was born
He learned to navigate alone
Guided by the stars

Mars and Venus, Jupiter
Plough, Orion, Polar Star
Milky Way that spirals far
Lighting up the night
Lighting up the night
Lighting up the night
