Eighteen

Old ways rack up a debt
Like welcomes I have overspent
And all the things I could have been
Now just days I've overslept

Still got my car and too much time
But they both stall at every light
And I can't afford to watch her die
But she's getting old, well so am I

With the menthols
And alcohol
Drop every ball
While close calls
Get closer
But when it's over
I won't care at all

Search the roads for signs of life
But no one's out this time of night
So I scan the fog, try to read the signs
Somewhere welcomes me tonight

It wishes me well as I leave
It's all just ground under my feet
'Cause I'm choking on the memories
Of burning bridges I had to leave

But once all the smoke clears
And all that's left are empty beers
And shattered mirrors
And laureled peers
Long past these puerile years
They're all grown up
While I'm still stuck
With "best of lucks"
Who gives a fuck?
It's what I chose
