The Dunsmuir

Yonder as we are
Yet reading the same pages in our own way
For us beauty can be found where others overlook
And I am burned by my failure for its expression

Asking if it ever makes me want to cry
I always hated speaking of those things
But it struck me cuz that's just what I went through
Locked out of my own little fantasy

To see the front columns
Like ever bared teeth of
The palatial facade of Morningside
All I wanted was just a look
Even partly obscured
Even from a distance
Would have made the trip worth it
Would have made me happy
But it was all concealed
A dream wrapped deep behind barbed wire

And there was no one at the gate to bribe
No lady in lavender
I sat in my car not surprised but nonetheless
Frustration spinning me dizzy

I didn't get that shiny moment
That taste of what it might have been like
Of what I thought I'd always remember
But one of these days
I'll see that piece of the past
That calls my name
One of these days
I'm getting to the Dunsmuir
