The Cherry Tree

A little while not far back
Sat a pretty cherry tree
And just beside sat a man
With his daughter at his knee

He went up to the tree and said
This pretty little tree would be better off dead
So he dug and dug and dug and tore
You could hardly recognize the tree no more

The little girl went up to her dad
And said papa why you hurt this tree
He said silly little girl why can't you see
This trees done nothing for me

But he failed to see the cherries
In abundance around his yard
But he didn't care the girl sat there
All torn up and scarred

Over the years many would come
To try and save the tree
The little girl grew up and watched them try angrily

For no matter how they tried they could not see
Just how cut the tree had been
The little girl sat looking by
No better than the tree

A young came walking up smiling
Said I'm here to fix your tree
The little girl said go away
Please can't you see

The tree has been cut so deep
It really makes me cry
Sometimes I wish that me and old tree would shrivel up and die

He handed her some tools and said let's
Let's go around back
They pruned and fixed around the tree kept
Kept everything intact

And later on that April
Later on that spring
That splendid tree sat surrounded by
Seven baby cherry trees

A little while not far back sat a pretty cherry tree
And just beside sat the girl with her son at her knees
She said son I want you to take care of this tree
And treat it like you should
Love it treat it with kindness for me
Don't let anybody tear down your tree
Love it treat it with kindness for me
Don't let anybody tear down your tree
