I Don't Know

This pretty girl in front of me
Is asking where I wanna be
When I grow up a little further down the road

Well I'm long past twenty-three
I'm an adult apparently
And I'm supposed to have it figured out

Then she smiles and shakes her head
You know that wasn't what I said
Or do you think that there's nothing left to learn?

She rakes her fingers through her hair
And then she meets my green-eyed stare
Oh come on, what are you dreaming of?
And I just sit here searching for words

But I don't know
Where to start
My future has always seemed so far

I want a small house with a dog
Far away from everything
Where the air wears a pine forest perfume

And every morning I'll awake
With birds calling my name
I'll have breakfast and walk with my best friend

We will watch the mountaintops
Floating high above the clouds
And wonder how it would feel to fly

And soar on a winter wind
Up there

But I don't know
Where to start
Should I just jump up and
Flap my arms real hard?
Take a chance
Make believe
That I'm looking down at the trees

I'll have all the food I'll need
Growing right here in the fields
And the river has all the trout a man can catch

In the winter I'll work out
By chopping up old wood
So the hearth can warm my weary bones

And at night I'll read my books
By the music of the flames
And travel to some forgotten land

She just laughs and takes my hand
You know, that doesn't sound half bad
But don't you think you're gonna feel alone?

And I just sit here
Searching for words to say
That in my dreams I'm not alone anymore

But I don't know
Where to start
Should I just be brave and
Open up my heart
Take a chance
Make believe
That she's curled up next to me
Fast asleep
In my arms
While the fire's burning low
Just hear her breathe
But I don't know
Where to start
