My Cousin & Me

My cousin and me have the same last name
But we don't look the same
He's taller than me
My cousin and me, we both love to play the game
That our dads loved to play
They're brothers, you see
My cousin and me have the same last name
But we don't look the same at all

My cousin and me have the same kind heart
Just please don't start any trouble with us
My cousin and me have the same wild emotions
That flow wilder than the ocean
Anytime you cause a fuss
My cousin and me have the same kind heart
But we don't look the same at all

And we don't look the same because our skins are different colors
Even though our dads are brother
We both look like our mothers
Neither one of us can know
What it's like to be the other
But we're peeling back the cover
My cousin and me

My cousin and me have the same grandparents
The best grandparents in the world for all I know
And those same grandparents, they grew up in a holler
Both their families were farmers, as far back as you can go
Just south of Kentucky
Considered themselves lucky
To have food on the table from the land that they owned
And remembering the '60's
They fully solved the mystery
That evening in '01 when my cousin was born

And that same kind heart, we both got from our grandmother
And we both laughed till it hurt at our grandpa when he cussed
We're 16 years apart, but they showed the same love
The same blind love for my cousin & me

I've only got one first cousin
I'll probably never have another
And that's alright with me
He's half black, and I am white
So it's my job to fight
To break the mold of the silence that white people tend to keep
To learn all that I can, how to best extend my hand
To sing as loud as I can stand about the power of love
The same love that is alive in my grandmother's eyes
The same love whether she's looking at my cousin or me

My cousin and me, we're standing here together
Both trying to get better at listening
Keep on peeling back the cover
Of yourself and all your brothers and your sisters
Keep marching till we're where we need to be
