We used to meet at Jake's swapping jokes and anecdotes
We used to talk 'til late and Jake would lock the bar's front door
We used to think we were wise but we were just as innocent as doves
We used to laugh out loud, that's just the way it was

There were six of us then and we told old Jake we were in a band
He didn't believe us, but when John met Mary, boy how he played guitar
He walked her home that night and the very next day he was right there by her side
That's when Mary joined our band and she told everybody how she sang

Two years later John and Mary left the town
And Judy took off for the lakes
We drank so much that night though I can still recall

Last night, I got a call, it's six years later and Mary's knocking at my door
She told me John had left, he said he couldn't take it anymore
We said we'd go to Jakes and drink to absent friends
But when we got there Jake had gone and outside the boarded up bar Mary sang
How she sang...
