Your Key Necklace

You've got a necklace that you love to wear with a tarnished key
That you found in the attic of your house amid your life's debris
You said you don't know what it's from but you took it anyway
And put it on a chain around your neck and wear it every day

You said, "This key hangs by my heart in case I need to get in
But I keep it locked inside my chest to keep it from wandering
'Cause I don't know what I'd do if it was chasing somebody else instead of you"

Well, I didn't know that you were so worried about your roving heart
That it must be kept under lock and key so it won't depart
But I guess your story speaks your testament to me
I only wish that you would let me throw away that key

I said, "That key hangs by your heart in case you need to get in
But if you keep it locked inside your chest to keep it from wandering
Then how will I ever know that it wants to be with me if it can't go?"

Well, that's a claim you couldn't refute, so you just went mum
But later added, "You've got a point, but boy you are so dumb
You see my heart is a wild beast that'll tear you apart
I keep it locked inside its cage before it can even start
Because I care too much about you to let that happen now
It's so much better for the both of us if it's just not allowed"

You said, "This key hangs by my heart in case I need to get in
But I keep it locked inside my chest to keep it from wandering
'Cause I don't know what I'd do if it was chasing somebody else
If it was chasing somebody else, if it was chasing anybody else instead of you"
