First American Dragon
In Oswego was born a dragon
Who'd woo the Queen of Oyster Bay
And in his childhood lost his parents
Although his country took their place
He was a soldier and a Yankee
He was a Sphinx Head and a Knick
He was an imperialistic liberal
He was loved and he was praised
He was the first American dragon
His fire was passion: hot and bright
And when he had to lay to rest
He was better than the rest
Oh, Willard Dickerman Straight!
He fled Korea in the wartime
He fled from China just the same
He tried to flee the influenza
And died in Paris, spreading peace
And though he didn't see his forties
Though his flame was short and bright
We still feel his lasting sympathies
We still seek the love he wrought
So when you wander onto Schoellkopf
When you visit Shield's for a bite
When you want a true Cornellian
Look to Will, he did it right
He is gone, far too soon, we need his light more than ever
"Treat all women with courtesy
The respect of your fellows is worth more than applause
Understand and sympathize with those who are less fortunate than you are
Make up your mind but respect the opinions of others
Think it out yourself guided by the choices of those whom you respect
Hold your head high and keep your mind open, you can always learn"
