Concept of Colors

The spectrum changes with passing generations
And, despite it all, the segregation is flagrant
This separation I speak of, my own race
The self-hatred that's been created when they isolate
From one another, just stating the facts
When you're, constantly told, "We don't speak like that"
Let's backtrack, so what you think is 'cause you can't understand
Or speak the English that I frequent, that's how we've been branded?
I need some answers, I'm severely confused
If wisdom contradicts our pigment, hypocrites within view
It's the same people critiquing 'cause I don't meet perception
That su-pported Obama during every election
It's now convention seems we've been brainwashed
Into thinkin' we can't be different, that we're strange if smart
We limit our own thoughts, to the heights we reach
Take pride in melanin except when truth ain't so skin deep

And that mentality, keeps success in the back
We complain about other cultures but divide is intact
Don't understand how we act, but understand when you're black
You've gotta work twice, as hard and that's only to get half

This ain't about unfair America, it's labels and stats
Not how we're unaware of them but this disparaging fact
We're centuries removed from when our ancestors rebelled
Against the, same views we've now placed on ourselves; concepts of color
Concepts of color...
Yeah, concepts of color
This ain't about unfair America, it's labels and stats
Not how we're unaware of them but this disparaging fact
We're centuries removed from when our ancestors rebelled
Against the, same views (Yeah)

Regardless of your upbringing, whether hood or suburban
I wrote this with intended purpose to show what is for certain
You may be still seen, as three-fifths or a perp
When you're working to kill the stigma, saturation has purpose
The challenges to our palette spanning more than a few
Losing a sense of value all because of your hue
The majority of minorities that's under attack
To the interracial kids that feel they have to subtract (Uh)
Part of themselves to find peace in society
Some people conform, others deal with notoriety
Results of fear or never being given a chance
This indifference towards resemblance only furthers the stance
There may be contrast, but let me pose a discussion
What's the difference between Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman?
Martin Luther, Nat Turner, Malcolm or Garvey?
Du Bois, Jordan Davis,Trayvon, Breonna, Arbery?
Same shade, but each affected the other
And despite these highlights the youth are claim new colors
Praying that they discover it don't matter 'cause in the end
To the ones that want us dead, we're all the same to them

That mentality, keeps success in the back
We complain about other cultures but divide is intact
Don't understand how we act, but understand when you're black
You've gotta work, twice as hard and that's only to get half

This ain't about unfair America, it's labels and stats
Not how we're unaware of them but this disparaging fact
Centuries removed from when our ancestors rebelled
Against the, same views we've now placed on ourselves; concepts of color
Concepts of color...
This ain't about unfair America, it's labels and stats
Not how we're unaware of them but this disparaging fact
Centuries removed from when our ancestors rebelled
Against the, same views we've now placed on ourselves
