Ice Land

I saw a doe there who had fallen down
80 feet of ground to the banks below
And in winter that had turned so cold
On that ground she froze
In ice that held all the shape of her bones

I couldn't save you
When the earth ran out and there was no ground left to walk
I didn't kill you, it was not my fault
I merely stopped
Because you had a habit of losing your footing and I

I saw the ice ahead
I always had foreseen the fall
I stood by, wondering why
I ever stood so close at all

I couldn't reach you
Once the ground was gone, it was such a long way down
I didn't need you to go on
And so I'd run
I'd run in circles until I was back
Back where I'd begun, and I-
