Down in the Bay

There once was a poor man who lived in the town
He took to the river and it dragged him down
Ever a mystery till this fine day
Why old Elijah washed up the bay

Down and round and down in the bay
Come back Elijah, come back to stay

Some say he followed a fair siren's call
Others were sayin' he followed his oar
Down to the bottom of this estuary
Whatever Elijah we never did see

Down and round and down in the bay
Come back Elijah, come back to stay

The next day his young lad a sailor so fine
Took out his gig for the very last time
In search of his daddy who never came home
For he sat at the bottom out Sugary cove

Down and round and down in the bay
Come back Elijah, come back to stay

He looked for him east and looked for him west
He looked for him like it twas his last breath
He never gave up till he knew all was lost
In his salt sodden overcoat covered in frost

For some while the body had never been found
And some for were sure he could not've drowned
Twas the talk of the town for ever a while
Till he washed up on Chesil over two score a mile
