They Work

(think of all the) City lights, shining down upon the street,
Working 'round the clock, in all the globe's cities,
And they work because we tell them to,
And they work because it's what they do,
They work,

(think of the) Single dad, trying hard to raise his kids,
Needing money they didn't have, for the things that they never did,
And he works so that they can survive,
He works and they don't even get by,
He works,

(don't forget the) Overactive minds,
their thoughts are always far away,
They leave the world behind, 'cause it's too painful just to stay,
They're working on their next big thought,
They work because it's all they've got,
They work,

(then there's the) Marriage on the
rocks, they're just trying to work it out,
They'd built up a fairytale life, with three kids and a house,
And they work to preserve that life,
But this ain't once upon a time so
They work,
