Kept Safe

This old safe the family inherited
Was kept by Jim who took good care of it
They trusted him, and he didn't complain
For generations the safe was passed down
Stayed in one family in this small town
Once was property of the post office on Main

It's a half-ton, all steel
Combination, four wheel
Rusty surface, multi-purpose
Post Office floor safe

When Jim passed on the whole town gathered
Out-of-town family came 'cause Jim mattered
Dressed in his overalls, he was bid farewell
Nephew Tom made a heartfelt endeavor
To take the safe with his old trailer
So heavy, 3 men needed forklift help

It's a half-ton, all steel
Combination, four wheel
Rusty surface, multi-purpose
Post Office floor safe

On the way home Tom stopped for gas
Got some strange looks while checking the straps
Back home he got the safe into his barn
He did all that trouble just for his dad
Who had long since passed but would be glad
Someone's making sure it sees no harm

It's a half-ton, all steel
Combination, four wheel
Rusty surface, multi-purpose
Post Office floor safe

Now Tom's the caretaker of the safe
Till its next move he must find a way
To keep it for the next generation
The keepsake tradition will continue on

It's a half-ton, all steel
Combination, four wheel
Rusty surface, multi-purpose
Post Office floor safe
