Monkey With a Monkey

At 11 years of age
I saw a monkey in a cage
He was parked outside a bar
And all the bicycles and cars

Would have a look and have a laugh
As they went flying past
The mascot of the drunks
And if that's not enough

As a curse or as a joke
They taught that monkey how to smoke
And gave him cans of beer to drink
So he wouldn't have to think

Smoke is on the rise, hope is dying on the wind
Hours rolling by, monkey getting high again
Hey, they gotta a sight that's gonna stop you in your tracks
Come and see the monkey with a monkey on his back

Bumming smokes and bumming lights
Unluckiest of Lucky Strikes
He was fighting off the shakes
He was looking twice his age

His hair was wearing thin
As he flashed a beggar's grin
He was sickly, he was gray
He was withering away

Smoke is on the rise, hope is dying on the wind
Hours rolling by, monkey getting high again
Hey, they gotta a sight that's gonna stop you in your tracks
Come and see the monkey with a monkey on his back

And I wonder what he saw
When he looked back at us all
Throwing matches on the ground
Disappointment all around

Smoke is on the rise, hope is dying on the wind
Hours rolling by, monkey getting high again
Hey, they gotta a sight that's gonna stop you in your tracks
Come and see the monkey with a monkey on his back
