Dawn Birds

It used to be
You didn't eat or sleep
And the city night would open up for you
Another butterfly
Beneath those sodium lights
That's a kind of nourishment too
So you set yourself on fire with invisible wires
Sparks flying yellow and blue

And those dawn birds were singing
A tune so nauseating
For a day about to break all over you

And year after year
Never ready to hear
Too busy raising the dead
Heart and hand burned
You live but never learn
And took it all for granted instead
Coping and conspiring, with the sun forever rising
Couldn't chase the shadows from your bed

And those dawn birds were singing
A mass communication
But the message just fly over your head

And they never play it the same way twice
And hey, every day's another roll of the dice
So what
That's life

A waking eye
The forever sky
Where the radio dial finds its tune

And maybe in time
In your future mind
You'll hear them whistling true
That all the sweet things
The glitter and the shimmering
They're only passing through

But those dawn birds will be singing
For everything just beginning
And a day about to open up for you

And if you let it be
Leave the forest for the trees
You'll find that melody too
