Leaving the Party

Thought of leaving the party again and again
There were too many people and few of them friends
And I'd run out of things I could do with my hands
Thought of leaving the party and then you walked in

You were wearin' that sweatshirt you stole from your mom
The one that she bought in Disney when you were just one
How do I still remember that? It's been so long
I can hardly remember the words to my songs
Yeah, I hardly remember the words to my songs

So I swam through the sea of the sweat and the booze
Someone spilled something purple on one of my shoes
But if given the option, I'd swim right back through
I don't get many chances to stand next to you

And it was hard to tell if you were telling the truth
When you said, "Everything has been great, how 'bout you?"
But I asked if you wanted to talk on the roof
Then proceeded to listen to all of the proof
I proceeded to listen to all of the proof

When we got back inside, there was nobody there
Just a few by the couch and a few by the stairs
And some music still playing, but I couldn't tell where
You were calling a car on the arm of the chair

So great to see you, let's do this again
Though we both know that's bullshit, it's nice to pretend
How I wish I could tell you just how much this meant
Or that my time with you's still best that I've spent
