Once Upon a Time in Sacramento

Turned down the smiling fake friendly esteemed
Just to sleep in a gutter and live like a fiend
Held up a torch to the city's dark belly
Hoping it's flicker might get licked before it's ready
Turns out I found what I'd never thought to own
A palace in the crags with no sceptre or thrown
These brothers they took me and gave me a name
They laid me before them and gave me a claim

We tried to live inside
We tried, we tried, we tried

Keep your eyes close in a crows nest for shine
And don't get tripped up by their fraudulent shrine
Turned out their pockets to give me some greed
A gift for the beggar who will never be seen
Sick of these tyrants advancing our shore
Toasting and laughing on forgotten lore
Not even trying to never be owned
Giving their time to the already de-throwned
I know that my riddles stoke your flickering fear
A speck in the embers that won't disappear
But these mechanical monsters that croak in their sleep
Won't even squeeze out a tear for the sheep
