Blackbirds

New Year's revelers
In a small town
Were enjoying midnight fireworks
When something other than sparks began falling from the sky

Thousands of dead blackbirds
Tumbled out of the darkness to the ground

They rained onto rooftops, and sidewalks, and cars, and lawns, and fields
One struck a woman walking her dog-another hit a police officer

A few stunned birds survived the fall
And stumbled around like drunken revelers

For some people the scene evoked images of the apocalypse
Many families phoned police instead of popping champagne
