Big John

Well, he first time I ever saw Big John
He was coming up over the hill
His old Ford tractor blowing thick black smoke
I ain't never had such a thrill

I'd heard stories all about Big John
Since I can't remember when
He lived in a two room shack by the water
Nobody'd ever been in

Big John catches fish for supper
Big John makes bathtub gin
Big John wouldn't recognize this world were living in

Before my time the neighbor boy fell
Into the gully and shattered his knee
Big John found him and carried him home
And vanished, he was never seen

The years flowed by on old Big John
People spotted John less and less
Then one wet, cold dark Christmas Eve morning
Old Johnny was laid to rest

Big John caught his fish for supper
Big John drinks the finest gin
Big John never had to see this world were living in
