The Sundowner

On his old grey head
He wears a pair of underwear
And spotted overalls
But he's naked underneath
He walks through apple orchard
In the heat of the noontime
And at dusk he drinks his supper
To ease his worried mind
And late in the night
He cries out to the shadows
And counts down the hours
As he's waiting for the light
In his old grey head
Confused thoughts are wandering
But as his madness deepens
He thinks that he's alright

They'll never know about
The little girls trapped in the hall
Drowning in a crystal ball
Every night... Past Sundown

In the pocket of his robe
He has a twelve inch kitchen knife
To protect him from the things
That are not even there
When people finally came
To take him to a peaceful place
They could not take him gently
And they were three strong men
Now he sits quiet
Relaxed, serene, sedated
First he lost his mind
Then his will to fight
When I think of what he's lost
And all the things that he's passed on
I think of tomorrow
And what's in store for me

They'll never know about
The little girls trapped in the hall
They're drowning in a crystal ball
Every night... Past Sundown
