My Father's Words

This was the last chance we had for fallen comrades
I gave it my all but the outcome wouldn't have changed
No matter how hard I fought
An ironic thought came to me
As I watched my best friend's head get blown off
No this isn't real
Not the gun in my hands
Not the screams of dead men
Not the smell of their blood
Sent here to die but I'll never give up because

My father said
A scared man is already dead
And the hero is cursed
Because the brave are the ones who die first

The memory of my home seemed so long ago
But still I will cling to this dying hope I'll return
And though it's been earned
This is my duty and I will stand firm
For what have I got
When all hope is lost
No matter what the cost
The blood that I spill is worth every drop
To die here in honor
