Nine Mile Square

Rivers converge
Dark under bridges
And rush unclean to the sea
Where the rails feed
Scrap poison rust down the banks
To anywhere
Anywhere else

Houses in the hills
With windows vacant
Stare unblinking down
At a collision of steel, brick,
And weather warped wood
Not much shines here anymore

Fingers of roots buckle the pavement
And climb through the cracks

The veins, the heart
The streets that cross this city like scars
Winters sweep away
Our scratches in the earth

The pulse goes on
Faint under a clouded sun
The endless march of footprints come and gone

Apartments lean
Back to back
Rippling under shadows
Of the mill's smokestacks
The streams run low now
The dam's gone dry
Revealing their secrets
To apathetic eyes

So breathe it in
And let it out
Another season's ending
In another New England town
