Sylvan Prison

At the edge of the earth or in its arboreal guts
I find myself trapped but not lost
Marvelously incarcerated!

Yet saved by the mercy your presence exudes
An exquisite influence
Taken from the scintillating ether above us
I question you with my speechless gaze
Are there craters on the moon named after you?
Or is the darkness betwixt stars
The true hue of your heart?

Preposterous! I am convinced
You are no demon, nor angel, nor human
But an unprecedented, immaterial experience

For even when the virescence
Is stolen from this wooded realm
That seems to bind us in the same dimension
There remains a ballet of color and vivacity
In the calligraphy of your silken motions
In your softest gestures
No matter how heavy the night
Falls upon our drifting cadavers
