The Optimist

When we first started nothing could ever go wrong
I was the optimist I guess that didn't last long

This world will teach you what mother can't
In a heartbeat you're another man
One who's too tired to fight for what he believes
You struggle against what you cannot control
You try to escape but you deepen the hole
My innocence is dead, leave me now I must grieve

I was born in a house on a road in the middle of nowhere
I can feel those memories but I can't go there

This world has taught me to love what I have
Treasure the feel of earth in your hand
One day you will join it and be at peace in the clay
People surprise me that they still go grow
They love and they laugh and who knows
I may be an optimist again by the end of the day
