Canyon Wide

Canyon Wide
By Nicole Kelley

When exactly the mountains fractured I don't know
The breaking of the plains and the ripping earth gave way
Till every layer was exposed
And the river began to flow
Beneath the craggy cliffs that onlyeagles know
In this Canyon Wide

Too soon after, the jackals' laughter echoed long
The desert held its breath, thinking beauty met its death
That every shred of hope was gone
While the silence droned on and on
Till its Master spoke and life grew wild and strong
In this Canyon Wide

With the knowledge the rock is solid deep inside
The heart of this old scar now a timeless slice of art
See the mark of death-denied
Where rescue and fault collide
Along these walls where bighorn sheep and deer still climb
In this Canyon Wide
