Loretta's Broken Locket

Loretta's Broken Locket rides along so quietly
With broken glass, a loose clasp, and sun-bleached photograph
Loretta's Broken Locket's pulled up by the beaten chain
It catches but it's never to come apart

A pretty trinket made up of stripped screws and pitted brass
To think she keeps it all in one piece
That photograph won't keep its color
It's all gone

Loretta tries to stay productive for her mental health
But it all seems so distracting to keep her mind at work
Loretta always find's she's picking at the cracking glass
And pulls the chain that keeps the brass clipped on her waist

A fragile trinket made up of yesteryear and promises
To think she keeps it all in one piece
Loretta squints to see what's come of all this time

Loretta's Broken Locket's certainly seen better days
Of hopes and dreams of living to serve the memory
Loretta doesn't see the brass that's turned a rusty green
And polishes the tartar on her new dress

A broken trinket made up of yesteryear and promises
To think she keeps it all in one piece
Nobody told her that time's meant to pass us by
