So She Learns

When we were young we used to sit and watch them play Nintendo
I guess we weren't cool enough to play it first
When our turn came around you had already gone home
I took our turn alone
But I searched for a smile of shared pain that would make it seem like only a game "Steel bars wrapped around us" was the song we used to sing
Around the block, when they were building
Me and my golf club; you and your fishing pole, guarding the street
I screamed at you, danger you ignored, while caged inside, you locked the door
Only my hands knew that the hold was strong
Only my hands knew to carry you to where you belonged
So she learns
Secret handshakes through the bars that wrapped around us
So she learns
