Childbearing

On a rainy street, I caught this scene:
Pretty little girl splashing puddles with her feet.
She was singing a song, so headstrong,
Looked like her mom who stood nearby.
Then she started to cry,
For no reason at all -
Or maybe for something she'd already lost -
And suddenly I knew the reason why
Girls will cry, like you do...

Just then a little boy,
Dressed up in corduroy,
He stopped to stare at that little girl there.
They were around the same age,
Mothers wore the same shoes,
Girl's tears turn to rage now the boy was crying too.
Looking over my shoulder,
Because I've been there before.
Now I'm feeling older and I don't look anymore.

That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday.
That little girl is going to break that little boy.
Someday,
Someday.

Man and wife, old friends of mine,
Asked me for a light outside the show last night.
She said "Lets get high, like old times,"
She twisted a J but then he walked away.
She said "I love him still,"
Like she needed to explain.
But when he reappeared he said "We can't stay.
'Cause the babysitter's home,
and now it's getting late,
I get tested at my job and I don't approve anyway."

That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday.
That little girl is going to break that little boy.
Someday,
Someday.

If you and me decide to be a child-bearing family,
Would you marry me,
Have a home,
Plant the tree, paint the nursery?
In a couple of years (or maybe ten)
Honey you know I can't foresee when.
We might settle down,
In some small town,
And leave behind this life.

People smile at a weeping child,
Because you know their sadness is going to pass,
And the years will bring,
Some real thing to cry about.

That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday.
That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday.
That little boy is going to break that little girl.
Someday
Someday
Someday
Someday
Someday
Someday...
