Of Stone Like Thee (Why Was I Not Made)

Look at them go, the rabbits in town, with their scarves and their smiles and such
As they walk unaware and with zero despair for of and the one they wouldn't touch
As he rushes through sidewalks and back alleys too in a quest for the senses he craves
And he doesn't complain, for he's not as insane as the ones better off for the grave

And yet, still, they look at him wondering aloud why he is slowly unraveling apart
And he wishes so fraught he'll reveal himself not to the one who has gone and has captured his heart
Why was he not made of stone like thee
Why was he not spared these sights to see

And yet like a play and right there on cue, she turns right round the corner to see
Our lad, poorly dressed and in states of distress and embarrassed as he can be
And he forces a smile and makes an attempt to seem casual, calmer and cool
And his confidence fades and his hand's overplayed and he laughs like a vaccuous mule

And they talk for a minute and then she departs, for the pastures so full and so emerald green
And he wistfully stares as she walks through the square, feeling unworthy and oh so unclean
Why was he not made of stone like thee
Why was he not frozen like a tree

He's made of flesh, he's made of bone
Don't talk to me, leave me alone
He should be strong, he should be tall
He isn't calm, no, not at all
Even the brightest room is painted seven shades of doom
The simplest task is far too much to ask

Oh how he sulks and how he bemoans that she saw him in this state of dread
Not worthy and clean as he'd like to be seen, but in his rogue and unseemly threads
And he stares at the ancient cathedrals of yore and a gargoyle, stately and grim
Looking stony and hard as they easily guard against demons and hunters of him

They've no time for feeling and no time for love, and they have no time at all for the vile and the weak
As he sits there and wonders, it rains and it thunders, He doesn't for hours dare contemplate speak
I should be up there for all to see
Why was I not made of stone like thee
