Wait and See

I tilled the old ground
Sowed the pristine dream-seed
Covered, watered, and left it for the sun
Now I've waited so long
And still whatever's down there's sleeping tight
But I know that it's alive

It's a humbling thing to be up all night
Thinking, "What if it doesn't show?"
It's a humbling thing to be all alone
In the bleak midwinter snow
Thinking, "What if I've sown a no-show?
What if I worked real hard but it still doesn't grow?"
But I trust that dream
Was a humble seed of a new thing
For now, I'll wait and see

Cling to the window
A desperate longing for a
Glimpse of color peeking through the soil
But still nothing!
With every tick of time
The weight of waiting buries me
Maybe I'm not unlike that seed

It's a humbling thing to be up all night
Thinking, "What if it doesn't show?"
It's a humbling thing to be all alone
In the bleak midwinter snow
Thinking, "What if I've sown a no-show?
What if I worked real hard but it still doesn't grow?"
But I trust that dream
Was a humble seed of a new thing
For now, I'll wait and see

I sow and water and tend the soil
Why can't growing be mine to control?
Is this weary hand worth this toil
Or should I fold?

It's a humbling thing to be up all night
Thinking, "What if it doesn't show?"
It's a humbling thing to be all alone
In the bleak midwinter snow
Thinking, "What if I've sown a no-show?
What if I worked real hard but it still doesn't grow?"
But maybe it's meant to be slow
Maybe before it can heal it has to be broken
Maybe this thing is a ghost
Waking up when I lose the thing I love most

Still I trust that dream
Was a humble seed of a new thing
I will trust that dream
Was a humble seed of a new thing
For now, I'll wait and see
