Old Friends

I had this friend
Let's call her Jane
She was always funny, but her jokes
Needed to be explained
And we
We'd get drunk most nights
So we had a few nasty fights
But a lot of grand epiphanies

And oh
I think I always knew
It was too good to be true
She took my hand and said
Some things would never change
And that's the last time I saw Jane

I had this friend
Let's call him Steve
He'd bring the cheap beer
And be the first one to leave
But he
Knew so much interesting stuff
He'd ramble on about Hendrix or wars
And somehow we never got enough

And oh
I think I always knew
It was too good to be true
He took a swig and said
We'd always be thick as thieves
And that's the last time I saw Steve

I had this friend
Let's call her Meg
We kissed once years ago
Never spoke of it again
She only hated one thing
No trespassing signs
She climbed one fence so high
Split her leg open wide

And oh
I think I always knew
It was too good to be true
I wonder if that scar
Is still there on her leg
'Cuz that's the last time I saw Meg

I've got this friend
Let's call her you
Never mind the history
There's plenty that we've been through
Oh these promises
They kind of feel the same
At least we've got the paperwork
So we can keep fanning the flame

And oh
I think I always knew
It was too good to be true
But we're waking up again
Here's to another day, my friend
At least for now
I know
I'll see you again
