Tulip Water

Snowmelt in a tarnished pot
Slowly brought to simmer
In the water, petals swirl
The kitchen light is dimmer
The hands that felt your shaking breath
Now are gaunt and thinner
Fragrant memory fills my lungs
And blesses me; a sinner

Through the window, cross the way
Murmuring, the creek
Close to freezing, like the days
The children laughed and shrieked
Shivered in the April light
The water 'round their feet
While slow and soft and quiet as night
The crocuses would peek

I can't kneel to kiss your hands
I can't bend to touch your face
Too many years I've walked this grass
The past, I can't erase

But I can sit and talk to you
As though nothing has changed
And when I go, I'll leave, my love
Tulip water at your grave
