When Fish Were Men

You have lots of work to do when the sun is up high
There's no use in sleeping in all day
Or staying up all night
We shall rise with the sun
Work with the sun
In the summertime, when the day is long
The fish should swim upstream where they belong

There was a fish who worked the winter in a frozen dream
He grew tired in the springtime
And refused to swim upstream
"We will go when I'm ready,
This is the only time I rest"
The fish said to his wife and kids
As he poked his head out from his river bed

The whole family longed to leave with the other fish
The Mother stood in silence
Stayed behind against her wish
Now the leaves are turning yellow
And soon they'll all be gone
Time is running out on the river route
Because Father slept too long

On a morning bright and early
Father Fish awoke
"I'll take you up the river babe"
"Ok, ok let's go!"
They all travelled upstream
Among the slush and ice and sleet
Arriving at the head water glen in spring
Just in time to turn back again

You have lots of work to do when the sun is up high
There's no use in sleeping in all day
Or staying up all night
We shall rise with the sun
Work with the sun
In the summertime, when the day is long
The fish should swim upstream where they belong
