Traveling Show

I'm just a player in a traveling show
Another town another dance another packup and go

I once loved a salesman in music man's disguise
He offered me melodies from his suitcase of supplies
The only man I've ever known who could wink without irony
His bag was empty but it was full of goodbyes

I once loved an artist who illustrates what no one sees
Her ink and her paint and her brushes give immortality
She calves up a piece of you just to leave on her canvas
She takes no payment, no no no, thats not her currency

I'm just a player in this traveling show
Another town another dance another packup and go

I once loved a tradesman
Who built a funhouse maze for me
The walls held me closely and lulled me with security
But soon all the mirrors were warped and I was trapped all alone
I grew so weary of my reflections mocking me

Someday, I'll want to stay
But it may not be today
It's a heavy, heavy load
But it's back out there, on the road

Now I've met a joker who lifts me up when I am down
Do a trick, act a fool
Just like a circus clown
I see the mask that he wears to hide a familiar sadness
I wonder if he's ever thought of settling down

I'm just a player in this traveling show
Another town another dance another packup and go
I'll never keep up with this travelling show
Another town, another song
Another pack up and go

Goodbye, yeah
