An Appointed Time

I heard the call of my master one night
Full like the thunder that roars out at sea
Yet tender like a mother with babe in her arms
Long and narrow is path
Heavy is my load
I am a poor pilgrim with too short a tale

The others my mock me and fill me with shame
But firm is the foundation
I stand upon
No crown of thorns
Whip or chain do I fear
My vision is clear
And my heart is open wide
Like Paul on the road to Damascus
I found my way

The rooster it crows
And brings forth the dawn
And the day will end
As soon as it begins
Still I labor and toil
My work isn't finished yet
The lantern still burns
Its oil won't run dry
It burn it burns
I don't ask why

Do I heed the call of my master
Or stay home inside
The tempest outside
Looms and destroys
Still the orchids breathe
Their sweet perfume
The light fills my bedroom
And sobers me up
Calm are my senses
Still is my heart
