Waking

The muddy road from the house
Curves up and away behind the pines
At the point of its disappearance
The usual, foreboding
Suck-out of sound and logic

The moonlight
Filters through the forest
Licks the tree limbs & breaks apart in
A floor of needles and wet earth everywhere
So many roads to think of, so many of them this
Setting at this early hour says you're never alone

Some animal circling the hill as if in warning or, worse
Circling in repetition until I'm spun back to last night waiting
On the train, a similar winding track
Disappearing too quietly out of view
So many damn roads, and so many damn turns in those roads--once
A bear running from the headlights, once another once and so on
Like frog spawn---

I half expected to find her
Less by choice than by her waking
Carefully along a turn in sleep upstairs

Miles back

Before the whimpering
And the frightful jerking
And the fright itself
Started

Where I will one day
Be able to put all this
Turning and mileage to rest
And let her face
In a fossilized form
Smile
Again
