Internet of Yesterday

In 1983
The world was simple then
My modem was the key
To all my online friends
Get home from school each day
Turn on my 64
Connect the modem and
Dial up a bulletin board (Bull-tin)

Facebook and Twitter, Twitch Instagram
Tik Tok and YouTube, Skype Telegram
None of them have, what we once enjoyed
Community chatting while not paranoid
Simple communiques sent one to one
Text based messaging, all just for fun
Sharing and helpful; quick repartee
Intelligent people, happy and free

Fidonet Door games
Shareware lists they compiled
Busy signals meant
Automodem auto-redial
Connected then kicked off
Your mom picked up the phone
The modem screeching...
It meant you weren't alone

Chatting with people from near and from far
Screen names in place of today's avatars
Everyone equal, with no overtones
Age sex and race were completely unknown
Sysops were watching us, chatting in text
Word length and parity, stop bits duplex
Typing our hearts out through the keyboard
On yesterday's Internet, the Bulletin Board
