That Tone (You Can't Win)
Recently I read about some big statistic
Something like how "all lives break the law"
Something like how "all lives ain't really all
'Cause it's really some lives that'll take the fall
And even when the big stats make it really clear
That you my white and black and brownish brothers are a mirror
Even though we're looking different let us make it clear
Something's been constructed and that thing is fear
Somewhere down the road or should I say up the stream
If we take a look back back behind the screen
Man I think the devil had it all up in his sleeve
"Let us make man think he's a different being"
Different from his black brother different from Asian sister
Different from his brown brother different from his Haitian sister
Different from his beautiful indigenous and limitless and image bearing people
That were on the land before a flag was planted here
Something's been constructed and that thing is fear
You can't win
You can't win
I won't ever let you win
I can't hear the thing that you're saying
Cause i don't like the way that you're saying it
Staying up late watching only horror movies
Not the Hollywood ones but they're just as abusive
Wake up in the morning and the news is always looping
I went to sleep with the same clothes that I put on
How does one take fatigue from generations of abuse
And shake it off? Please tell me something new
Your prejudice is eroding my skin and my soul
Yet telling me "Hey baby keep pushing on"
How does one go about telling you that they just wanna live
In such a way that makes you wanna listen and not run instead?
And hear their plea for life be about their life
Not their plea for life not about what tone is right?
Just saying that "I can't imagine what you going through"
"Man that's so terrible. I can't believe that this is true"
That's not enough to heal all of the generations pain
Accountability ain't justice for the silent graves
Something's been constructed and that thing is fear
You can't win
You can't win
I won't ever let you win
I can't hear the thing that you're saying
Cause i don't like the way that you're saying it
Something like how "all lives break the law"
Something like how "all lives ain't really all
