Heart of Darkness

Walking at night with my brother
In a forest my father had sown
Together we knew we feared nothing
How strong and brave we had grown
We talked of our future, all the things that we wanted
We spoke of ideas that were grand
But this was our last night together
For something much worse was at hand

For we carry the sins of our fathers
An eternity's wrong to make right
And I pray that I only have daughters
And teach them the ways of the light
Is it better to know, the dark seeds that we grow
Or blissfully walk in their shade?
You can hide it with riches, or a young woman's love
But a man's heart of darkness remains

The stories were elaborate, yes sir
Growing with each sip of our wine
Deeper through the woods we marched on
Not keeping mind of the time
The hour of the wolf was approaching
And although we hardly could see
Onwards we walked, and onwards we talked
'til my brother fell down a ravine

For we carry the sins of our fathers
An eternity's wrong to make right
And I pray that I only have daughters
And teach them the ways of the light
Is it better to know, the dark seeds that we grow
Or blissfully walk in their shade?
You can hide it with riches, or a young woman's love
But a man's heart of darkness remains

His bones, they were broken, and he'd lost so much blood
The forest, it shook with his voice
I carried him back to the old path
But we both knew that I had a choice
The howling of the wolves getting closer
And both of our lives were at stake
So I ended his life with a boulder
And I left him there, sealing our fates

For we carry the sins of our fathers
An eternity's wrong to make right
And I pray that I only have daughters
And teach them the ways of the light
Is it better to know, the dark seeds that we grow
Or blissfully walk in their shade?
You can hide it with riches, or a young woman's love
But a man's heart of darkness remains

So I gather the bones of my brother
In a forest where once I was bold
As I bury him alone, I feared nothing
For at least now our hearts both were cold
