The Boys

Why don't the boys paint their faces?
My mother laughed and called it "war paint"
Pink pepper spray on a keychain
My father gave me mace for Christmas
Because he loves me

Why are the boys taught survival?
All I got was that friendship bracelet
Homework to draw a pretty tiger
I quit the Girl Scouts from that assignment
Because I love me

Why aren't the boys praised for sweetness?
The king of the pack is praised for conquests
Owning another woman's body
Grabbing the knife to add his notches
'Cause he doesn't love her

And we were taught to walk with keys laced in our fingers
Cross the street if we see any stranger
Kick the knees if we've been overtaken
Elbowing our way to being safer

The senator stared at his shoelaces
Cornered inside the elevator
Forced into witnessing her heartbreak
I guess it's time for the investigator
'Cause he loves his daughter
'Cause he loves his daughter
'Cause he loves one of us
