The Shadow
I met this man back in 91
When his life was replete
He spent his days like so many others
Bringing family relief
His face and hands showed the hard work he'd done
Wasn't hard to see
He was a man that never complained
He had opinions and beliefs
The shadow stands right next to him
It consumes what he sees
His thoughts and feelings are no longer his own
He doesn't know what he needs
The gift of life has been stolen from him
By the hands of grief
His mind is gone to a place he don't know
He is lost and deceived
He would sit there in his Yankee's hat
And his pocket tee
Looking out at the lawn that he loved
And worked so hard to keep
He had a best friend that he called Prince
Loved unconditionally
Spent his night's watching Tiger baseball
And western's on TV
The shadow stands right next to him
It consumes what he sees
His thoughts and feelings are no longer his own
He doesn't know what he needs
The gift of life has been stolen from him
By the hands of grief
His mind is gone to a place he don't know
He is lost and deceived
Now the bright lights are something he no longer sees
The undying truth is something he can't conceive
And all that's left are the memories shared by you and me
He lived his life showed us love
He was the best he could be
The shadow stands right next to him
It consumes what he sees
His thoughts and feelings are no longer his own
He doesn't know what he needs
The gift of life has been stolen from him
By the hands of grief
His mind is gone to a place he don't know
He is lost and deceived
When his life was replete
He spent his days like so many others
Bringing family relief
His face and hands showed the hard work he'd done
Wasn't hard to see
He was a man that never complained

It consumes what he sees
His thoughts and feelings are no longer his own

The gift of life has been stolen from him
